Since November 2024, the Journalism Lab has been working with Dayton-area students in projects aimed at developing a growing cohort of future journalists.
We have helped middle school, high school and college-going students turn their ideas into stories that have featured in leading national, regional and local media outlets.
Ismael David Mujahid’s story and photos (below) about Dayton’s Ukrainian community on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion was featured on page one of the Dayton Daily News in February 2025. Ismael, a recent graduate of Sinclair Community College, has gone on to freelance regularly for the Dayton Daily News.
Cristina Tinsley and her fellow students at the Meadowdale Career Technology Center developed and reported a story about the struggles students face getting to and from school. In June, their long-form feature article was published in Teen Vogue, one of the world’s leading publications for young people.
